Many people fail to realize all the hard work and preparation that go into becoming a beauty pageant winner. Endless days must go into getting in shape physically, practicing interview questions, perfecting talent routines, and of course, shopping for the outfits that will make you truly memorable in the eyes of the judges. There are several different outfits that you must have to compete in all portions of the beauty pageant, and the most important is typically the evening gown. If you’re getting ready to shop for pageant dresses, here are some tips you should keep in mind.
The most important thing to remember about pageant dresses is that they must be appropriate for the young woman who will wear them. If you’re on the shorter side, a long dress that drags along the ground is probably going to make this fact more noticeable to the judges. If you’ve got smaller breasts, a dress with a high neckline or loose fitting top will likely make these things more obvious than you want. Work with your parent and tailor to find a dress that truly fits you correctly and you’ll have the best chance of favorable judging even if the outfit isn’t the flashiest or most expensive.
Which brings us to another important element of shopping for pageant dresses: finding a budget you can live with. You won’t have to be in the beauty pageant world for very long to realize that it is an expensive hobby. Top of the line designer dresses typically cost thousands of dollars, and sometimes more. When you add in the price of alterations, additions, and accessories, the price tag goes up even more. Talk with your family or manager about how much you can realistically spend, and don’t tempt yourself by shopping in stores you know you can’t afford.

It’s important to choose pageant dresses that are professionally made, and tastefully cut. Judges usually shy away from dresses that have plunging neck or backlines, or are otherwise too revealing. You want to find that perfect balance between sexy and classy, without wearing something that is too modest or outdated. Try on dresses with different types of top cut styles, because this is the element that has the most to do with the way you appear in the dress. The neckline serves as a frame for your face, and if it’s too high or too low, it can change the way the dress seems to fit you.
